Curious Electric Licence

What you are buying

The licence,
in plain words.

This is not a set of terms and conditions. We do not have any. German consumer law already covers the sale, and adding our own version of it would only be a way to make it worse. This page says what you may do with the software, which the law does not say for us.

What you get

You buy the instrument, not a device. The licence is yours, it does not expire, and it is not tied to one piece of hardware. Put it on any device we support, and on a replacement if you break one. If you own two of them, use it on both.

It follows you rather than the box. That is the point of the product and it is meant literally.

What you may not do

Do not resell the firmware, give it away, or publish it for download. That is the one thing that would make this unsustainable, and it is the only restriction here.

Everything else is yours to do. Take it apart, read it, modify it, run modified versions on your own devices. We would rather you told us what you found, but you are not obliged to, and nothing here purports to remove a right the law gives you, including the right to study and adapt software for interoperability.

Your sounds are yours

Anything you make with this belongs entirely to you. Kits you build, recordings you make, performances you give, whether you are paid for them or not. We claim nothing over them, we ask for no credit, and we could not see them if we wanted to, because nothing you load leaves your machine.

The example packs are Kenney's work under CC0, which is public domain: use them in anything, including work you sell, with no attribution required. Each pack carries its own credits file.

Updates and support

Five years of updates and security fixes from release, published as plain files you download and keep, on the delivery page you receive after purchase. After the five years the software you have keeps working exactly as it does now, and a further update window would be a separate purchase if you want one.

Nothing here checks in with a server. There is no activation, no licence key and no account, so there is nothing that can stop working if we do.

If it goes wrong

Your statutory rights as a consumer apply in full and nothing on this page limits them. That includes the fourteen-day right of withdrawal, which we do not ask you to waive.

If it does not work on a device we say it works on, tell us and we will fix it or refund you. dirkk@curious-electric.com
